Found: Season 2 Episode 5 – Missing While Presumed Dead

Review for previous episode here.

SPOILER ALERT! I discuss plot points as well as speculate on future plots and twists. Watch S2 E5 on NBC.

The Case of the Week

This case was well done. Probably one of the top episodes regarding the development and resolution of it. And now that that’s out of the way…

Poor Gabi

Gabi has been going through it. She is outwardly keeping it together, but I know she’s cracking. She got ‘adultified’ as a teen — stepping in as nurturer and caretaker of a young girl at 16 years old. And there she was, having to look after her drunken father as well. She was a crutch for Bella, Bella’s mom, and her own dad; in fact, she began her whole ordeal as a crutch for Sir! She was something he projected so much onto, a validation of himself. Poor Gabi Mosely — holding up both kids and adults since 15 years old.

Detective Mark Trent

I don’t know what else to say about Trent. He is exhibiting chilling cruelty, yet there’s always at least one moment per episode where he leaps to help Gabi when he perceives she’s in danger. I wouldn’t despise him as much if I could see that conflict playing out while he’s saying shitty things to Gabi, some degree of remorse or self-loathing on his face, even if he continues to be trash. I’m glad he got checked by both Lacey and Gabi this episode on his pettiness.

As for his dad, meh. He amused me personality-wise, and then made me see red when he warned Gabi off Trent. Like, what? Trent is the one who won’t leave Gabi alone. What an ass. And did his dad do shady vigilante stuff, hence Trent’s attitude? Trent senior said he and Gabi are alike, so what did he do that crossed the line? 🤔

Basket Case Margaret

Great — sassy Margaret is still here. No thanks! I’m so done with her. It’s unfortunate she’ll probably be released from police custody next episode. She really has some nerve, thinking she can take over Mosely & Associates when she can’t even make it through a press briefing without losing her shit. Not to mention her compulsion to go to that bus station every night.

I loved her character in season 1, and now I want to see both her and Trent brought to their knees, begging for mercy. Of course, Gabi is going to throw on her cape to help out-of-pocket Marge out of whatever bind she’s in now, and Margaret will probably just keep spewing venom at her and telling her all the world’s ills are her fault. Just start calling Gabi ‘Pandora,’ Maggie.

It’s bordering on sadistic at this point — she seems to enjoy stabbing Gabi while she’s down. But at least it seems Gabi is tiring of it. She hasn’t clapped back in any satisfying way, but the way she elegantly told her to run along to the bus station while the rest of them worked the case Marge went over Gabi’s head to reopen *chef’s kiss*

That moment made me once again wonder if Gabi deliberately set her up to humble her at that press briefing.

Christian Evans

Why is he so insistent on ‘helping?’ He’s up to something for sure. That’s right, I still don’t trust him. He’s still being creepy when it comes to boundaries (yes, I am aware Gabi is also a boundary buster, but she’s not creepy).

I did enjoy him trolling Hugh — Sir vs. Chris was top entertainment. Thanks, writers!

Hugh Evans

I enjoy Hugh getting his Serial Mom on (big fan of that movie). It’s the small things that matter! Conversational etiquette — big deal. Kidnapping? Peanuts.

“You’ve become susceptible to her charms. She’s not for you.” Oh, god — get a grip, Hugh! But Sir in possessive mode was a treat.

And then there’s “Once I fix things for them, she will come.” Hmmm… So one way or another, he plans to handle the team in various ways to send Gabi to him willingly. I look forward to seeing this play out. The Margaret angle is obvious, but the rest, not so much.

Lacey

Lacey came through being sensible AF, hopefully shaming the high-and-mighty somewhat regarding how much more the victims matter than their petty feelings. I think when Gabi breaks, Lacey will have to step in big time to help bring her back around. Speaking of cracked Gabi…

Gabrielle Mosely

At the end of my second watch of this episode, it hit me big time what might happen (or might have happened already) — a beautiful and appropriate twist.

At the beginning of the episode, Trent implies Gabi could be helping Sir, which Lacey rightfully dusts off; it sounded so ridiculous given what we’ve been shown so far.

And then there’s what we’ve been shown so far. Gabi seems to be having a psychotic break; she’s cracking, and big cracks have been showing recently.

Dhan and Lacey witnessed her having a lively conversation with a nonexistent Sir as she listened to his tape recording. Trent almost caught her talking to a nonexistent Sir when she took him to her basement a few episodes back. She seemed shocked Hugh wasn’t actually there when Trent emerged. This makes me wonder if Hugh was on the bench in that back-to-back scene or if she imagined him there too. It would explain the Batman-like disappearance (this time).

So far, I’ve been theorizing Christian Evans might have dissociative identity disorder, but what if it’s Gabi? What if, all this time, we’ve been seeing Gabi of Mosely & Associates, but Gabrielle emerges to work with Sir? It would make a little more sense of a few of the nonsensical things that happened, considering Gabi’s access (e.g. the poisonings).

Fans have been speculating Sir’s accomplice could be Christian, Lena (the Evans sister), even Annie, positing she’s not really dead.

Characters keep saying Gabi is just as bad as Sir, as ridiculous as that is. But what if she is, in a way? What if Hugh Evans broke her to the point she’s now two people?

I suppose Lacey remembering Sir saying to someone on the phone that Gabrielle would never forgive him if Lacey died throws a wrench in the theory. But it’s fun to think about for now.

Here’s what I thought about Season 2 Episode 6.
